what is financial planning?

Simply put, it's a game plan to get you where you want to be.  Sound oversimplified?  Let's break it down...

vs.

You're the quarterback, and we are the coach. We prepare and guide you with our expertise, but you are in control.

DEBT

COLLEGE COSTS

Despite what most people think, your opponent is not your enemy.  Learning to handle your opponents well actually makes you a stronger player.  But it's your coach's job to get you ready to take them on.  So how exactly does your financial planner (coach) do that for you?

1

Determine Your Starting Point - what do you have?, what do you owe?, how much do you spend?, and how much do you save?  In other words, where are you right now?

2

Define Your Goals - What do you want to achieve?  Perhaps you want to fund retirement, pay for or help pay for children's college and weddings, do a home remodel, take a dream vacation, minimize taxes, pay off debt, maximize employee benefits, minimize risk, leave something for the next generation, etc.  Everybody has a different set of goals.  The first step to achieving them is determining what they actually are.

Create Strategies - This is where we determine the "how."  What is the best way to get you on track to reaching your goals?  Depending on what yours are, we'll create strategies to:

  • handle monthly cash that comes in and out

  • invest

  • pay down debt

  • fund college education/wedding/retirement

  • minimize taxes

  • etc.

Make It Happen - Together we determine what adjustments need to be made to set you on the right path to achieving your goals.  Then we follow through and implement.

Monitoring - Just like a game plan has to be fluid to respond to the opponent in real time, so does your financial plan.  One thing you can count on is that life is always changing.  Whether you have unexpected income (a bonus or inheritance, for example) or an unexpected expense (roof or HVAC replacement, for example), your plan has to be able to flex with you.  So while you are busy living life, we are constantly monitoring and adjusting your plan as necessary to keep you on track.  After all, what's the value of a plan even one year later if it can't respond to your life changes?  And perhaps more importantly, what's the value of implementing a plan that nobody is monitoring your progress on?  No coach walks off the field after the first 3 minutes of the game, and neither do we.

Bottom line: This is life.  You're in the game.  Your future depends on you having the right coach cheering you on to victory.
